About this article
This article reviews official Microsoft information on Viva Connections as of September 18, 2026, clarifying the basic scope for E3/E5 and the additional licensing required for multiple experiences.Verification Status: 📘 Official Microsoft Information Verified / Not Tested on Actual Environment
Viva Connections is designed to help employees navigate SharePoint intranet portals, news, links, and dashboardswithout getting lost, serving as an entry point. It is not a new document repository, but a front door that aggregates existing information from SharePoint and Microsoft 365.
E3/E5 and Additional Licensing
According to Microsoft, users with E, F, or A-series licenses can create and usea single experience in Connections. To create and use two or more experiences (up to 50), all users in the tenant must have a Microsoft Viva Suite or Viva Communications and Communities license.

Where to Start
Initially, design the entry point using just three categories: 'Information to view today,' 'Frequently used locations,' and 'My tasks.' Try changing just one link based on the target audience to see if it reduces unnecessary navigation. Assign an update owner before expanding audience targeting.
Practical Example
Listing 100 links on a company-wide portal does not reduce confusion. Organize 'where to click next' by role—such as attendance, requests, and regulations for administrative staff, and approvals and management information for managers. IT departments should also separately verify the permissions and authentication for services connected to the cards.
Differences from SharePoint
SharePoint is the foundation for building pages, documents, and lists, while Connections is the experience that makes them easier to access. It is not a matter of 'SharePoint or Connections,' but ratherusing SharePoint as the foundation and Connections as the entry point.
Key Points for Administrators to Check
Verify the home site, default landing, target audiences, card destinations, SharePoint permissions, mobile display, the need for multiple experiences, and additional Viva licensing.
Official Microsoft Information & Primary Sources
Fundamentally, Viva Connections should be designed not asa product to increase information, but as an entry point to reduce confusion around existing information.
